The Eliza Notebook’ was created between 1978 –79 parallel with the better known notebook on Mary. Though written in the model’s hand the journal is punctuated by 19 exquisite studies of Eliza Massey, which amply demonstrate Lenkiewicz’s extraordinary sensitivity to the physiological state of his companion as evidenced by the subtlest of visual clues – the tilt of the head, the manner of sitting, or the colour of a garment. Unseen since the notebook’s creation, ‘The Eliza Notebook’ unbound folio is a stunning introduction to the private world of Robert Lenkiewicz.
The unbound folios exist in two editions – one edition of 150 copies which is being distributed nationally through Whitewall Galleries and an exclusive Friends Proof Edition of just 49 proof copies. The Friends Proofs are only available direct from The Lenkiewicz Archive priced at £350, a £100 saving on the recommended retail price of the national edition.
Robert Lenkiewicz left behind an extensive archive of sumptuously-illustrated diaries, journals and Project notebooks, rich in watercolours, gouaches and drawings. However, this archive presents numerous difficulties with regard to publicly exhibiting the bound works within it, not least because of the fragility of the originals and the sensitivity of some of the personal material. To overcome these limitations The Lenkiewicz Archive has chosen an innovative publishing format – the unbound folio – which presents limited edition reproductions of works from the archive in deluxe presentation cases together with guide notes explaining their significance within the artist’s oeuvre.
